Energy, delivered where it counts.
Rice bran oil fatty acids, bound with calcium into a soap that protects them in the rumen and releases them downstream.
A calcium soap that waits for the right pH.
Passes through
Calcium salts are largely insoluble at the near-neutral pH of the rumen, so rumen fermentation is left undisturbed.
The soap lets go
In the acidic true stomach the soap dissociates, releasing free fatty acids and calcium.
Absorbed as energy
Fatty acids are digested and absorbed: an energy supply for milk production and body condition.
Protected, and not.
| Stage | Unprotected oil or fat | OryzaFat (calcium soap) |
|---|---|---|
| Rumen | Unsaturated oil is exposed to rumen microbes: it can coat fibre and disturb fibre digestion, and much of it is biohydrogenated. | Largely insoluble at this pH. Passes through mostly intact, leaving rumen fermentation undisturbed. |
| Abomasum | What remains moves on. | Acid splits the soap, releasing free fatty acids and calcium. |
| Small intestine | Absorbed, but with a fatty-acid profile altered in the rumen. | Fatty acids are digested and absorbed. |
Four steps from the refinery.
Rice bran oil
Oil extracted from rice bran, a by-product of rice milling.
Refining
Refining separates a stream of rice bran oil fatty acids.
Saponification
The fatty acids react with a calcium source to form a calcium soap.
OryzaFat®
Finished, tested and packed as a rumen bypass fat.
To be confirmed: detailed manufacturing, washing and drying steps will be added from PBS Oil Industries' process documentation.
